Dr. Jeffrey Gair, Jr. received his B.S. degrees in Bioengineering and Biological Sciences in 2009 and his M.S. and Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering in 2016 and 2017 from the University of Maryland. From 2009-2017, Jeff worked for the United States Army Research Laboratory (ARL) on a wide range of projects, including high-rate mechanical characterization of materials, the design of protective equipment for vehicle occupants, and developing new materials for aerial vehicles. For his doctoral and postdoctoral research, Jeff worked closely with MIT’s Aero/Astro department and the Institute for Soldier Nanotechnologies to understand and develop multifunctional materials for air vehicles. In 2018, he relocated to Cambridge, MA to continue and expand collaborations at MIT as a Visiting Scientist, and grow an ARL program for multifunctional and intelligent materials and systems. During that time, he continued to work closely with MIT’s Aero/Astro department, while building new relationships with professors from the MIT Media Lab, MIT’s Department of Materials Science and Engineering, and MIT’s Department of Physics. In 2019, Jeff left ARL and joined the Maryland Development Center to focus on medical technologies R&D in the private sector.
